SC Gallery is excited to present “Fluid Aesthetics,” a captivating duo exhibition featuring two Hong Kong visionary artists of Jeremy Fung and Wong Shun Yu at the upcoming Abu Dhabi Art Fair. This showcase illuminates their unique artistic journeys, weaving together distinct styles and innovative material explorations.

Jeremy Fung, both painter and sculptor, draws profound meaning from his primary medium: wood. His artistic practice transcends mere craftsmanship, delving into the symbolic depths of this organic material. Through techniques of scorching, staining, and distressing, Jeremy reveals the raw beauty of wood, crafting surfaces that are uneven and jagged, exposing the hidden intricacies within. Each piece exudes a weathered elegance, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of history, decay, and memory—a meditation on existentialism itself. Featured prominently is “Flow I & II,” a striking diptych in oil on wood. Here, Jeremy intertwines symbols and diverse materials, capturing the chaos and complexity of existence—mirroring life’s unpredictable nature. His bold imagery, infused with personality, is accentuated by the powerful strokes of black ink, showcasing his mastery of form and color.

In contrast, Wong Shun Yu embodies a deep reverence for Chinese culture, particularly the rich customs of its ethnic minorities. His artistic inquiry is anchored in a profound exploration of materials, with silk serving as his canvas. Drawn to its storied history, Wong employs a unique method of washing and layering paint, forging a deep connection between artist and medium. Utilizing Japanese silk and traditional Chinese pigments, his works resonate with the essence of a time-honored craft. Wong's pigments, derived from nature—ranging from malachite to vermilion—are crafted using gemstone minerals and animal glue, creating a vibrant palette that breathes life into his art. His distinctive technique, which involves rubbing, dyeing, and washing, conjures an ethereal, hazy quality reminiscent of memory. This interplay of traditional Chinese painting methods and the dyeing techniques of ethnic minorities culminates in images that are both mysterious and vibrant.
